Aventura – Rethinking Education
Most of the people love the concept of education. It is common knowledge that a good education is linked with a higher quality of life. That is why people who fail to pursues higher education don't do so deliberately. Usually it happens because they have some other restricting factor. This factor can be of financial nature or it can be of methodological nature. While we have recognized the first one, and we are actively providing financial opportunities for more and more people, little or nothing is done for the former.
Aventura is going to be an organization which focuses on developing new methods of teaching. We need this that because there is a big issue with the way we are teaching right now––these methods are not inclusive enough. Everybody has different talents and different ways how to retain information. Nevertheless, since the inception of compulsory schooling, the most common way to teach has been frontal instruction. The teacher stands in front of the class and passes on his knowledge by lecturing his audience. While some students are able to succeed in such an environment, others fail completely.
To show you what I am talking about, I will tell you the story of a dear friend of mine. Maximilian is 19 years old, yet all his classmates are 16. He had to repeat a year three times during his academic career. Nevertheless, he is an intelligent boy––he speaks three languages fluently and is musically talented. Neither did he face any other issues in his environment which impeded him from pursuing his studies. His only issue is that he is not compatible with the current teaching methods. He does not feel involved in his studies. As a result he is often seen as somebody who failed in life. This takes away the motivation for study even further.
The goal of Aventura is to eliminate high school drop outs. At the moment 6.1% of all the students in the US drop out each year. We want to reduce this number to 0 within 10 years of the inception of the organization. One of the central parts of the organization are the students. That is why we are going to cooperate very closely with them, taking in feedback and adapting our plan to the current needs. Everything will be funded by government and private philanthropy. Eventually everybody is going to profit from higher productivity and higher standards of living thanks to higher
education.
