Who I Am Matters

I am coming from a little town in the Italian alps called Brunico. This town is located in a region of Italy called South Tyrol. This region has something special to it which clearly influenced my life. It lies on the border between Italy and Austria, and less than a century ago it still used to be Austria. There has been a clash between the Italian culture and the German one, especially during the times of fascism. The results of this conflict can still be seen today. I was lucky enough to get to know both sides of the issue. My mother was born into the German culture and my dad was born into the Italian one. Therefore, I can speak either language, a luxury which not everybody enjoys where I live. At the moment I am on a journey with no objective. I have no idea where I am going to be in 5 years. For now, I am completely open to where I am going to work and live. The only thing I know is that eventually I want to go back where I came from. There is no other place like home, that is why I want to go back to either work at the family business or to build up something on my own.  Through my college studies, I will be able to see a large part of the world due to the global nature of the program I am attending. I am already far from home and next year I will be living in Hong Kong. I am literally going to travel around the world.

The names of my parents are Birgit and Marco. Only reading the names you can tell which culture they lived in. My character is very similar to theirs. Both of them are very pragmatic, straight forward and open minded. These are attributes which I recognize in myself. My father is very dutiful and he transmitted this value to me. Nevertheless, since my dad is home only on weekends I am more similar to my mother in the way I act. But there is a big difference between my mother and me; while she is brush and unapologetic in the way she gets stuff done, I am more considerate, calm and less temperate than she is. My parents have strongly influenced my career choice. Even if they kept saying that I am free to choose whatever I want, I probably would not be here if my dad was not a business man. I am sure that there were some expectations of theirs that I would choose such a career. But as it is now, I start to develop my own expectations. They are still in a very early stage, but I am working on them. This year I started to figure out the values i believe in and according to which I want to act. One big one is for example loyalty and friendship. Being away from home helps to get a new point of view.

One of the people I admire is the physics teacher I had in high school. While he was teaching you could see that he was in his element. He really enjoyed what he was doing and I hope I will be able to find a profession which brings me as much joy as his job brings him. He is the head of the school's astronomy club as well. A club I have been part of for four years (therefore, I am very skeptical about the whole idea of astrology which is going to follow, but I will give it a shot).

I feel a special connection to the heron. I am always impressed when I see one of those birds taking flight. It gives me a certain idea of freedom. They fly from place to place without ever settling and nothing holds them back. Sometimes they rest and observe their surroundings. They stand there on one leg, just looking at what is happening around them. I like the idea of an animal which just observes, because it is something I am totally capable of doing as well. I could sit down on a sidewalk and just look at the people passing by for a long time. If I think about Herons I always think about the encounter i had about two years ago. It was in the summer and I was walking my dog through the woods which are close to my house. As always I let him run around freely. As we were passing the creek which goes through forest, he suddenly runs into the high grass surrounding the creek. From exactly where my dog went a Heron took flight, and flew away over my head. This was the only time I had ever seen a heron in that forest.

  1. Hey Patrick,

I completely understand wanting to end up back where you came from. I went to school away from home for 4 years and have ended up back home in LA at USC!

  2. Hi Patrick,

It is cool to see that you were a part of an astronomy club! I took Astronomy my sophomore year and I was absolutely fascinated by all the amount of information we have here on Earth and I am excited to see where Space exploration goes! I remember how skeptical my teacher was regarding the idea of Astrology.

  7. Being from Florida, I also agree that there is no place like home! There is something about where you spent your childhood that cannot be replicated anywhere else.
